Holiday cocktails @ Cafe Milorca

 

THE time around Christmas and the new year is a great one in which to rustle up some celebratory cocktails. We like ours old-school, so here are three of our long-time favourite recipes for some southern hemisphere summer stunners!

White sangria

Everybody knows sangria made with red wine and many will surely have suffered the effects of a summer sangria hangover too!
This recipe for a somewhat more sophisticated white sangria was adapted from Salvelio’s mother’s and is one we simply adore serving our guests. It just looks so elegant with its subtle tinge of crimson and almost pearly-pink pomegranate seeds glistening like tiny jewels between the ice cubes.

Ingredients for each glass:
Ice cubes
2 slices of lemon
Whole mint leaves – 2 sprigs each
1 Tablespoon pomegranate seeds
3 tots dry white wine
1 tot white rum
1/2 tot Cointreau
1/2 teaspoon red wine
Lemonade to top with

Method:
Place the ice cubes, lemon and mint in the glass. Add the white wine, red wine, rum and Cointreau, then fill up with the lemonade, as much as is needed. Finally top with the pomegranate seeds – some will sink to the bottom but it looks really pretty if you can keep a few for on top! Stir through gently and serve.

Pimm’s Cup

No British summer is complete without a refreshing Pimm’s No 1 Cup cocktail, where it’s served at the cricket, polo and just about everywhere else! Here in South Africa, Christmas is always in summer, and often spent by the pool, and to us the colours of this marvelous classic cocktail seem very Christmassy indeed. It’s also a super refreshing drink on a scorching day, when nothing beats a great, big jug of the stuff. Don’t worry: even when it gets all melty it’s still good!

Ingredients for each person:
2 tots Pimm’s No 1 Cup
2 slices orange
2 slices lemon
2 strawberries, hulled and halved
2 slices cucumber
2 sprigs of mint
Ice cubes
Ginger ale to top with (you can also use lemonade, but we prefer ginger ale)

Method:
Place the ice cubes and fruit, cucumber and mint in the glass. Add Pimm’s, then top with ginger ale to fill the glass. Stir through and serve.

Aperol Spritz

Lou loves her Aperol Spritz in summer! Aperol, an Italian drink not unlike Campari but with an almost luminous orange glow, is delightful when topped with prosecco (Italian bubbly – though we have used South African cap classique to great effect) and a splash of club soda. Michelle Puggia from Fratelli Foods in PE sells prosecco, or you will find it at Prestons or Woolies from time to time.

Ingredients for each person:
Two tots Aperol
Three tots prosecco (or other bubbly)
Splash of club soda
Orange slices
Ice cubes

Method:
Place ice and orange slices in a wine glass. Add Aperol, then the prosecco and finally a splash of club soda. Stir through and serve.
